Known Holdings is proud to work with Color Farm Media to provide this free and open to the public screening. Known, co-founded by Jim Casselberry, Valerie Red-Horse Mohl, Nathalie Molina Niño, and Ushir Shah, works to scale BIPOC ownership in the financial industry, where wealth is created and allocated, to support the new BIPOC majority.
The Big Payback is a true story about the journey of a Black woman, Robin Rue Simmons, and her fight in Evanston, IL to pass the first tax-funded reparations bill for Black citizens. The film also highlights Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee‘s continued push to pass national reparations legislation US House Resolution (H.R. 40) in Congress. Co-directed by Erika Alexander (actress, Living Single and producer of John Lewis: Good Trouble) and Whitney Dow, the film premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film festival, with Joy-Ann Reid as one of its executive producers.
“We are so excited to support the first public screening of such an important film. The filmmakers take the audience on a powerful journey exploring race and identity, the legislative process, and the much-needed conversation about reparations,” said Jim Casselberry. “We launched Known to close the racial wealth gap and to address the structural barriers facing BIPOC entrepreneurs and investors: barriers that inform the struggle for reparations.”
The free public screening will be followed by a talk-back moderated by former Bronx Assemblyman, Michael Blake with Erika Alexander (co-director, producer), Whitney Dow (co-director), Robin Rue Simmons (the former Alderwoman of Evanston), and Dino Robinson in a conversation about the policy and politics of introducing reparations for slavery to African Americans on the local and national level.
